This Machine Surrounds Hate and Forces It to Surrender

“This Machine Surrounds Hate and Forces It to Surrender” is an itinerant programmatic cycle that proposes to address the issues of hate, prejudice, difference and freedom through new artistic creations.
The inspiration for this project was the singer and activist Pete Seeger. When in 1969 he inscribed “This Machine Surrounds Hate and Forces It to Surrender” on his banjo, he was alluding to the immense capacity of art to dismantle and subvert ideas and systems. It also reaffirmed its civic and political intention to fight against hatred, for democracy and for justice. He managed to do it in a way that was both poignant and subtle, simple and with countless layers of complexity.
Today, the debate regarding difference, inclusion, history, symbols and culture is based on various prejudices. If we don’t know how to question them, we can hardly
build a better democratic system.
The quality of our democracy depends on our individual creativity and collective imagination. We will try to involve different communities and we will promote workshops,
debates, residencies and performances that address discrimination, symbols and citizenship. Let’s dismantle the logic of the dramatic and frenetic polarization that we are experiencing today.

A project by ondamarela, co-produced by CAE-Sever do Vouga and CAO – Ovar and co-financed by the Direção Geral das Artes.

On the 27th we will receive Marco Paiva, Catarina Neves and Maria Vlachou for the PAR performance and the debate.
